  • Grange Park Golf Course: Long-tailed Tit - 2+ - possibly several pairs, inspecting nest sites ; Blue Tit - 6+ - several singing ; Great Tit - 1+ - several singing ; Nuthatch - 2+ - 1 singing in Walkworth Woods, at least 1 taking suet pellets from post in Brick Kiln Plantation ; Treecreeper - 1 - singing from woodland adjacent to 9th fairway ; Magpie - 3+ ; Jay - 2 ; Carrion Crow - 2+ ; Woodpigeon - 1+ ; Chaffinch - 10+ - at least 2 singing ; Goldfinch - 10+ - most in mixed flock with Chaffinch and possibly Linnet? at Walkkworth farm, feeding in game cover
  • Handsworth garden: Coal Tit - 2
  • Houndkirk Moor: Pink-footed Goose - 90 - flew W at 10:05 hrs - seen from Stanage Edge
  • Lockerbrook: Crossbill - 2 - Possible pair drinking in stream below Lockerbrook to Ouzeldon track near weather station
  • Longshaw: 320 - 1 - On pond with Mandarin ; Mandarin - 40+
  • Middleton Moor: Wigeon - 2 - Drakes ; 320 - 34 ; Lapwing - 265 ; Golden Plover - 1
  • Monk Wood: Kestrel - 2
  • New York, Rotherham: Mistle Thrush - 2 - over Centenary Way to SE
  • Northfield, Rotherham: Herring Gull - 25+ - loafing on rooftops & visiting recycling centre ; Great Black-backed Gull - 7 - 6 ads; 1 2cy
  • Old Brampton: 325 - 1 - In field by bridleway (Nuttack Lane), south of Main Road, SE of church 1515-1530hrs at least.
  • Parkgate Canal Basin: Mute Swan - 14 - inc 7 in from E ; Mallard - 41 ; Black-headed Gull - c20 ; Grey Wagtail - 1 ; Herring Gull - 14 ; Song Thrush - 1 - singing
  • Porter Brook: Kingfisher - 1 - Male on wire dam. ; Dipper - 1
  • Porter Clough: Kestrel - 2 - m + f, presumed pair ; 319 - 1 ; Rook - 29 - feeding in field
  • Porter Valley: Song Thrush - 4 - 4 males singing, Hanginwater Allotments to Wire Mill Dam ; Dipper - 2 - singing male, pair
  • Redmires Res: Greylag Goose - 60 - c. in fields ; Canada Goose - 33 - in fields ; Mallard - 16 ; 320 - 8 - on Middle Res ; Goldeneye - 1 - imm male on Bottom Res ; Kestrel - 2 - inc imm male ; Sparrowhawk - 1 - hunting ; Curlew - 1 - flew NW at 08:05 hrs - later seen displaying over Ocean View ; Raven - 5 - flew N calling ; Crossbill - 4 - party of three female/imms by track to Stanage + single male by Top Res ; Brambling - 2 - flew E from roost ; Skylark - 2 - on Ocean View ; Fieldfare - 40 - in fields
  • River Derwent: Dipper - 5 - Between Harper Lees and Nether Padley including two singing ; Goosander - 1 - Male ; Mandarin - 2 - A pair
  • Rod Moor: Marsh Harrier - 1 - cream-crown flew low to the north at 09:52
  • Rud Hill: Red Kite - 1 - Over Rud Hill till driven away by 4 ravens ; Red Kite - 1
  • RVCP: Whooper Swan - 1 - The single bird present all month ; Oystercatcher - 1 - 1st returning bird ; Raven - 2 - over W and onto pylons ; Wigeon - 130 - monthly max.
  • Shirebrook Valley: Skylark - 1 ; Goldfinch - 6 ; 319 - 2 ; Great Tit - 1 ; Skylark - 1
  • Silverwood: Tawny Owl - 2 - Separate birds roosting but close enough to be a pair.
  • Stanage Edge: Golden Plover - 8 - seen distantly over Hallam Moors from High Neb ; Skylark - 1 - flew SW over High Neb ; Meadow Pipit - 1 - over High Neb ; Pink-footed Goose - 135 - flew W over High Neb at 09:20 hrs
  • Stannington, west: Skylark - 2 - 200 yds east of Flash Farm. Both calling. 1 called from wooden post, flew to perch on stone wall ; Tree Sparrow - 5+ ; Fieldfare - 100+ - Flying NW over Flash Farm ; Rook - 25+ - In field 300 yds SE of Flash Farm
  • Thorn Hill, Rotherham: Herring Gull - 18 - loafing on rooftops ; Great Black-backed Gull - 16 - loafing on rooftops
  • Whiston Meadows: Goldcrest - 1 ; Chaffinch - 1 - singing
  • White Lee Moor: Marsh Harrier - 1 - cream crown heading W then SW behind New Cross 10:25, no doubt the Rod Moor bird.
  • Wire Mill Dam: Mandarin - 12

Saturday 4th February 2023

  • Aldwarke: Peregrine - 2 - Pair on and around Liberty melting shop in morning. Showing courtship display.
  • Brincliffe Edge: Lesser Redpoll - 1 - feeding in birch for over an hour. ; Song Thrush - 1+ - Heard singing for last 3 days
  • Canklow: Song Thrush - 1 - Singing near Job Lot at 05:20
  • Graves Park: Wren - 1 ; Song Thrush - 1 - singing ; Ring-necked Parakeet - 5+ - Various small groups flying around
  • Hathersage: Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 ; Canada Goose - 44 - Field near Leadmill Bridge
  • Houndkirk Moor: Woodcock - 1 - flew over Sheephill road to fields late dusk
  • Middleton Moor: Oystercatcher - 1 ; Lapwing - 150+ - at 11:00 ; 320 - 46 ; Wigeon - 2 ; Greylag Goose - 5 ; 321 - 1 ; Pheasant - 2 ; Golden Plover - 7
  • Millhouses garden: Blackcap - 1 - male, visiting sunflower hearts feeder this morning
