  • Wharncliffe Heath NR: Nightjar - 2 - Male churring, another bird flight calling

Thursday 30th June 2022

  • Burncross, Chapeltown: Swift - 5 - Over nest site
  • Curbar Gap: Red Kite - 1 - Quartering cut silage fields.
  • Foxhill: House Martin - 12+ - Over Shaw Hill
  • Handsworth garden: Starling - 26 - mixed flock of adults and juveniles feeding on bread
  • Langsett Res: Great Crested Grebe - 7 - incl. brief display by a pair near western shore 18.30, all adults. ; Common Sandpiper - 04-May ; Oystercatcher - 4 ; Kestrel - 2+ - Adult tending to at least one calling juv ; Black-headed Gull - 7 - incl a juvenile. ; Canada Goose - 114 - including a fresh batch of goslings ; Lesser Redpoll - 12 - Resting on western shore 18.30 ; 319 - 1 - Circling carrying a young rabbit prey. ; Chiffchaff - 2 singing ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 12 - NOT lesser redpoll
  • Low Hall Wood, High Green: Swift - c40 - 14.00 Feeding group appeared below blackening clouds
  • Midhope Res: Grey Wagtail - 6 - Definitely one, maybe two family groups with juvs. ; Willow Warbler - 2 singing ; Jay - 2 ; Tufted Duck - 6 - Male, female + 1 juv, female + 2 juvs ; Little Grebe - 6 - incl. pair seemingly nest building western edge ; Greylag Goose - 95 - incl a gaggle of 28 goslings ; Swift - 1 ; Little Ringed Plover - 2 - Seen separately and both left calling eastwards but may have returned. ; Kestrel - 3 - Adult + juv plus another adult seen carrying prey from Midhope Moor, over res and northwards across valley and over horizon. ; Oystercatcher - 6 - Sadly the large juvenile was seen deceased at the bottom of the overflow but 6 adults calling around the res itself. ; Siskin - 1 ; Chiffchaff - 2 singing ; Common Sandpiper - 5 - 4 adults + an independent juv. ; Lapwing - 7 - all juveniles feeding on western shore before leaving towards Midhopestones. ; 319 - 2 ; Meadow Pipit - 4 - incl one carry food across res towards Midhope Moor ; Linnet - 4 ; Raven - 1 - Flew up the valley towards Langsett ; Hobby - 1 - Flew low across fields towards Midhopestones. ; Mandarin - 1 ; Little Ringed Plover - 2 ; Oystercatcher - 1 - Sadly deceased juvenile
  • Midhopestones: Swallow - 2 - juveniles on wires
  • Orgreave Lakes: Yellow Wagtail - 2 - Adults
  • Oughtibridge: Swallow - 4 - Juveniles sat on wires, Burnt Hill Lane
  • Rawmarsh; Rockcliffe Road: Greenfinch - 2
  • Rivelin Valley: Dipper - 2
  • Rotherham; Meadowbank Road: House Martin - 5+ - in area where breeding usually takes place
  • Underbank Res: Little Ringed Plover - 3 - Seen at northern neck during showers at 19.00, flushed by dog walker. ; Common Sandpiper - 2+ - Adult plus at least one juv. ; Grey Heron - 1
  • Wadsley Common garden: Swallow - 6 - All young fledged-feeding over garden with adults.

Wednesday 29th June 2022

  • Attercliffe: Peregrine - 1 - adult on Bernard Road incinerator building
  • Burbage Valley: Kestrel - 5
  • Canklow Woods: Woodcock - 1 - 1 roding at 2210
  • Middleton Moor: Yellow-legged Gull - 2 - Adults ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 220 ; Reed Warbler - 3 - singing ; Oystercatcher - 2 ; Greylag Goose - 5 - Pair with 3 juvs ; Stonechat - 5 - Juvs on fence by path to hide
  • R Don, Effingham St: Yellow-legged Gull - 1 - adult on Wards roof
  • Silverwood Lagoon: BLACK-NECKED GREBE - 10 - 5 adults, 3 near-independent young, 2 dependent young. Still mainly keeping to edges of eastern and southern reedbeds ; Little Grebe - 12+ - 6 adults and at least 6 young of various ages. Others calling in reedbeds ; Mute Swan - 11 - resident pair still with all 9 cygnets, which are doing really well ; Sedge Warbler - 1 - brief song from scrub above north-east corner of lagoon ; Reed Warbler - 6+ - 2 singing, probably two pairs feeding young in roadbeds ; Kestrel - 1 ; Skylark - 2 - singing ; Song Thrush - 1 - singing ; Common Buzzard - 2 ; Jay - 3 ; Whitethroat - 4+ - still a few singing around pit top ; Swift - 4 ; Swallow - 2 ; House Martin - c.12
  • Win Hill: Peregrine - 1 - repeatedly swooping and soaring over the summit
  • Worrall: House Sparrow - 12+ - Leucistic fledgling amongst garden residents

Tuesday 28th June 2022

  • Burbage Valley: Stonechat - 12 ; Reed Bunting - 1 ; Whinchat - 4 - Family Group
  • Dore: Red Kite - 1 - S. over observer’s house
  • Padley Gorge: Nuthatch - 5+ - family group feeding together ; Spotted Flycatcher - 1
  • R Don, Stevenson Road: Canada Goose - 6 - 3 pairs, with 9 (5, 4 and 3) Goslings feeding on waterweed.
  • Ravenfield: Tawny Owl - 1 - Juv in garden at end of Braithwell road @ 21:30
  • Ringinglow: Kestrel - 5 - Family Group
  • Stannington garden: Siskin - 2 - Pair coming to feeders every day for last 2 weeks ; Blue Tit - 4 - Just fledged and associating with 2 recently fledged great tits at feeders ; Great Tit - 2 ; Sparrowhawk - 1 - Male had a failed attempt on a young robin
  • Stubley Hollow: Magpie - 24 ; 319 - 1 ; Chiffchaff - 2 ; Blackcap - 1
  • Thrybergh Tip: Sand Martin - 100 - c100 feeding low over the water.
