  • Firsby Res: Willow Warbler - 3 ; Chiffchaff - 5 ; Reed Bunting - 2 - Males calling and chasing each other.
  • Greno Wood: Woodcock - 2 - Roding at dusk ; Tawny Owl - Pair ; 319 - 1 ; Swallow - 5 ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 - Male actively feeding/calling 21.00
  • Greystones garden: Starling - 18 - 14 Juveniles ; Woodpigeon - 2+ - 1 Juvenile in observer's garden ; Swift - 1 - over
  • Hathersage: 319 - 1
  • Longshaw: Song Thrush - 1 ; Willow Warbler - 2
  • Orgreave Lakes: Turnstone - 1 - Feeding alone on south bank of main lake at 17:45. ; Turnstone - 1 - Second picture.
  • Padley Gorge: Tree Pipit - 2 - In birches at the bottom of Lawrence Field ; Stonechat - 1 - Male singing from an isolated Silver Birch in Lawrence Field ; Pied Flycatcher - 6 - 4M, 2F.. One female taking nest material to one of the boxes near the top of the ramp
  • Rawmarsh; Rockcliffe Road: Robin - 1pr+ - + 4 juvs approaching independence, fed by male; female now presumably on second clutch ; Lesser Redpoll - 1 - calling from treetop; left W/NW ; Greenfinch - 1 - singing
  • Stanage Edge: Ring Ouzel - 1m ; Lapwing - 2
  • Surprise View: Cuckoo - 2 - a male calling frequently from birches between car park and Mother Cap. Female giving bubbling response; two seen flying off NE
  • Thrybergh CP: Marsh Harrier - 1 - One cream crown 1145 - 1155 Bird drifting East towards Ravenfield ; Mute Swan - 78+8y - Second pair now have young but not showing off nest yet
  • Thrybergh Tip: Cetti's Warbler - 2 - At least 2 birds singing ; Reed Warbler - 6+
  • Weston Park: Moorhen - 2 - Pair nesting on lake, seen regularly since late April, nest presumed washed away by recent rain. Both still present.
  • Wharncliffe Heath NR: Pied Flycatcher - 13+ - 10+ males singing, 3 females, 3 active nests in boxes ; Tree Pipit - 2 ; Coal Tit - 10+ - Nest in silver birch stump with 5+ juvs
  • Wyming Brook: Wood Warbler - 1 - Singing ; Wood Warbler - 3 - 2 singing males, together with a single bird wing fluttering on branches below one of the male birds. ; Siskin - 5 - Small flock ; Willow Warbler - 6+

Thursday 13th May 2021

  • Barbrook Plantation: Willow Warbler - 1 - taking food to nest in grassy tussock ; Stonechat - 2+ - 2 adults with 2 recently fledged juvs ; Blackcap - 1 - singing male ; Song Thrush - 1 - carrying food ; Robin - 1 - carrying food
  • Barley Hall: Long-tailed Tit - 2 - pr, one carrying feathers
  • Brincliffe Edge Wood: Goldcrest - 2 - Pair collecting food all day
  • Burbage Valley: Meadow Pipit - 10 ; Cuckoo - 1 - Calling from the plantation ; Willow Warbler - 4 - Singing ; 319 - 1 ; Wren - 2
  • Canklow Woods: Lesser Whitethroat - 1 - singing
  • Carr Vale NR: 332 - 1 - Bird with injured leg sometimes vanishing for periods, but showing very well at times at S end of reserve. Also on southern marsh between mound and main pond mid-afternoon. ** although, for the purists - just outside the SBSG recording area ** ; Whimbrel - 2 - In front of mound, then flew N mid-afternoon. ; Mallard - 6+ - On main pond, including pair with 5 young chicks ; Reed Warbler - 3 - At least 3 singing main pond ; Common Tern - 2 - Territorial pair ; Grey Heron - 2 - Main pond ; Mute Swan - 2 - pair, with female sitting on nest in reeds by main pond
  • Catcliffe railway pond: Reed Warbler - 4 - Singing males
  • Dog Kennel Pond: Coot - 2 - adults @ nest W end, 5 eggs, nest material still being added. ; Sand Martin - 2 - active around nest site, and landing to pick up grit. ; Mistle Thrush - 1 - adult possibly from nest @ W end
  • Firsby Res: Moorhen - 1 - Perched in bush at side of main Res. ; Grey Heron - 1 ; Lapwing - 2+ - Pair with 3 chicks ; 319 - 1 - Mobbed by crows early morning. ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 ; Blackcap - 1+ - Female with chicks ; Willow Warbler - 3 ; Chiffchaff - 2 ; Whitethroat - 3 ; Chaffinch - 2 - Singing Males.
  • Fulwood garden: Grey Heron - 1 - Circling high overhead ; Starling - 6+ - At least three pairs feeding recently fledged juvs in garden - first juvs.
  • Greno Wood: Crossbill - 8 ; Jay - 2
  • Greystones garden: Grey Heron - 1 - Flying over ; Swift - 2 - Flying over
  • Hesley Hall Farm: House Martin - 2 ; Swallow - 2
  • Longshaw: Song Thrush - 1 - Singing ; Swallow - 1 ; Mandarin - 3 - Males ; Mallard - 4+ - 3 ducklings ; Chiffchaff - 1 - Calling
  • Low Common: Mistle Thrush - 1 - feeding ; Blackcap - 1 - singing from copse
  • Mayfield Valley: Tawny Owl - 1 - adult carrying prey over Cottage Lane towards Hangram Lane late rmoning
  • Millhouses: House Sparrow - 2 - Feeding young in nest box on tree
  • Morley Pond: Great Crested Grebe - 3 ; Mute Swan - 1 - nest? W end island. ; Greylag Goose - 4+ - 4 adults, 1 with goslings(couldn't count due to heat haze). ; Mallard - 1+ - inc female with 1 recently fledged chick. ; Tufted Duck - 10 ; Pied Wagtail - 1 ; Blackcap - 1 - singing ; Reed Bunting - 1 - singing
  • Orgreave Lakes: BLACK-NECKED GREBE - 1 - still at S end of big lake (diving) at14.45 ; Common Tern - 2 - feeding over big lake at 14.15. ; Little Stint - 1 - Western edge of large lake
  • Padley Gorge: Treecreeper - 4
