  • Treeton Dyke: Mute Swan - 14 - 2 pairs, each with 5 well grown cygnets at N and S end of dyke
  • Treeton Tip: Yellowhammer - 1 - Singing male
  • Wadsley: Swift - 10 - Only the second time in 20+ years that “our??? swifts have stayed until August.
  • White Stones (Redmires): Stonechat - 2 - pair still actively defending territory ; Willow Warbler - 1 ; Wren - 1 + - Adult taking food into audible (pre-fledge) young ; Meadow Pipit - 4 + ; Goldfinch - 6

Friday 31st July 2020

  • Banner Cross: 319 - 2 - Presumed juvs circling and calling over observer's garden.
  • Barbrook Pools: Linnet - 20+ ; House Martin - 2
  • Barbrook Valley: Whinchat - 5 - 3 (1f + 2 juv) + 2 (1m + 1 juv) ; Whinchat - 5 - juv ; Marsh Harrier - 1 - cream-crown ; Stonechat - 1 - juv ; 319 - 1
  • Baslow: Hobby - 1 - West over observers garden at 6.20pm
  • Bradwell Edge: 319 - 1
  • Ecclesfield: Common Buzzard - 1 - Cross Hill - going south,intent on something, - wings swept back!
  • Greaves Road, Ecclesfield: Swift - 9+ - Group screaming above old chapel on High Street.
  • Greystones: Red Kite - 2 - reported over at 16:40
  • Offerton Hall: Corvid - 100+ - Mainly (if not all) Rooks
  • Orgreave Lakes: Greenshank - 1 ; Green Sandpiper - 1 ; Green Woodpecker - 1 - Along railway line
  • R Don, Effingham St: Lesser Black-backed Gull - c30 - inc 4 juvs ; Herring Gull - 6 - 1 juv ; Yellow-legged Gull - 2 - 2s and 3s ; Stock Dove - 2 - drinking in river
  • Ramsley Moor: 319 - 4 ; Kestrel - 1 - f ; Carrion Crow - 4 - 2 ad + 2 juv ; Red Kite - 1
  • Rawmarsh; Rockcliffe Road: Goldfinch - 2
  • Redmires: Black-headed Gull - 1 ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 3 ; Meadow Pipit - 20+ ; Swallow - 1 ; Kestrel - 1 - Male
  • Redmires Bottom Res: Yellow-legged Gull - 1 - One adult among flock of LBG, HG and BHG.
  • Redmires Top Res: Crossbill - 2 - Over Low to the E
  • Shatton Moor: Kestrel - 2+ ; Wheatear - 2 juv ; Pied Wagtail - 1 ; Stonechat - 1 ; Raven - 4 (2+2)
  • West Wood, Tankersley: Green Woodpecker - 1 - Seen and heard in ancient oak trees near A61
  • Wire Mill Dam: Mandarin - 3 - 1 eclipse male, 2 female ; Moorhen - 2+ - Pair with 3 well-grown juvs

  • Bowden Housteads Wood: 324 - 1+ - Several Purple Hairsteaks on the northeastern edge.
  • Cortworth Lane: Jay - 1
  • Hangingwater garden: Woodpigeon - 1 - juv unaccompanied
  • Hathersage: Canada Goose - c38 - In fields between Hathersage & Leadmill Bridge ; Rook - 35+
  • Hoober Lane: Kestrel - 1 - male
  • Johnson Lane, Ecclesfield: Common Buzzard - 1 - Circling over. Mellor Lea Farm estate,1.30 pm.
  • Kimberworth Park: Swift - 20+ - Active low between Roughwood Rd and Shearman Avenue most of day numbers building from 5,10,12 then over 20.
  • Mayfield Valley: Little Owl - 2 - Adult and imm on walls along Foxhall Lane
  • Midhope Res: Willow Warbler - c10 ; Spotted Flycatcher - 1 ; Moorhen - 1 ; Little Grebe - 2 ; 320 - 1 - fem ; Mandarin - 1 - fem
  • Norton Lees garden: Long-tailed Tit - 2
  • Padley Wood area: 324 - 2 - Red Deer stags in velvet
  • Parkgate; Greasbrough Road: Sparrowhawk - 1 - soaring over @ 1200hrs
  • R Don, Attercliffe: Sand Martin - 1 - Went in pipe in riverside wall, came out with faecal sac, near Newhall Road.
  • R Don, Effingham St: Herring Gull - 6 - including the first juv
  • R Don, Hillfoot Bridge: Kingfisher - 1 - flew across standing traffic on bridge
  • Ravenfield: Redstart - 1 - moulting male dropped onto verge from hedgerow on Ravenfield Lane
  • Redmires Bottom Res: Yellow-legged Gull - 1 - Adult amongst LBG’s and B/H Gulls ; Stonechat - 1 - Juvenile in bracken
  • Redmires Res: Curlew - 5 - on Bottom Res in p.m. ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 90 - c. ; Common Gull - 2 - ads flew W ; Black-headed Gull - 60 - c. on Bottom Res in a.m. ; Moorhen - 1 - ad on Top Res ; Mallard - 20 - c. on Middle Res ; Grey Heron - 1 - imm
  • Rivelin: Sparrowhawk - 02-Mar - calling and flying through trees at Walkley Bank Tilt
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Swift - c.80 - down in light shower at 06.45
  • Tinsley Locks: Moorhen - 4 - 2 adults and 2 tiny chicks

Wednesday 29th July 2020

  • Burbage Valley: Raven - 2 ; Whinchat - 4 ; Stonechat - 3 ; Ring Ouzel - 1 - Close to the road and Stanage Edge
  • Castle Dyke Playing Fields: Swallow - c. 30 - c.25 juvs on fencing around cricket nets, plus ads hunting over adjacent playing field
  • Derwent Dam: Jay - 1
  • Greystones: Swift - 5 - Over observer's garden
  • Grindleford: 337 - 1 - reported over Maynard Arms late morning, heading S to Curbar Gap then over towards Longstone Edge, with a further report near Baslow at 14:30.
  • Howden Res: Cormorant - 1 ; 319 - 2 ; Kestrel - 1
  • Kimberworth Park: 319 - 1 - soaring between Scholes Coppice and Shepherd's Plantation @ 13:30.
  • Middleton Moor: Lesser Black-backed Gull - 240 ; 321 - 1 ; Yellow-legged Gull - 4 - Adults/near adults
  • Moscar: 319 - 2
  • Orgreave Lakes: Common Scoter - 1 - still present this morning
